NOVAK DJOKOVIC
World number one Novak Djokovic enters Wimbledon in search of a 20th Grand Slam title to equal Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal’s joint-record. The Serb will not play a singles match on grass until the first round here but he reached the Mallorca Championships Men’s Doubles final, at the time of writing, following his second Roland-Garros title. 34-year-old Djokovic is the reigning champion here after a famous five-set victory over Federer in 2019. Djokovic also won the 2018 Wimbledon title with victory over Kevin Anderson and he has five titles in total at The Championships.
JACK DRAPER
19-year-old Jack Draper has earned his wildcard debut to Wimbledon after an incredible breakthrough performance at the Queen’s Club Championships two weeks ago. Draper moved up 59 places to a career-high 250th in the ATP world rankings after reaching the quarter-finals before defeat to fellow Brit Cameron Norrie. The teenager was in control against Mikhail Kukushkin at the Miami Open earlier this season before retiring from heat exhaustion. Draper claimed his first win inside the top 200 when he took out third seed Jannik Sinner at Queen’s in two tiebreaks.
THE PREDICTION
Double defending champion Novak Djokovic will return to SW19 in high spirits after a strong grass campaign in the Men’s Doubles in Mallorca. The Serb likely needed an ease into the grass court season with little attention after such an incredible victory at the French Open. 34-year-old Djokovic’s defeat of Rafael Nadal in the semi-final felt momentous in terms of his chasing the Men’s Grand Slams record. With Nadal out of the tournament and Roger Federer still an uncertainty the Serb is the firm favourite to tie them for 20 career major titles. This will be the biggest day by far of young Jack Draper’s career. The Brit will be well supported against the reigning champion but it is hard to see anything other than a straight-sets win for Djokovic.
