NIKOLOZ BASILASHVILI
World number 28 Nikoloz Basilashvili has overcome a torrid 2020 season to win two ATP titles this year at the Doha Open and Munich Open. The 29-year-old now has a total of five ATP titles to his name and he recently reached the semi-finals of the Halle Open for some solid grass practice. Basilashvili’s best showing at a Grand Slam was reaching the round of 16 of the US Open in 2018 but he has so far not made it past the third round here.
ANDY MURRAY
Two-time Wimbledon champion Andy Murray makes his long-awaited return to the Men’s Singles here at SW19 having played in just the Doubles events back in 2019. The former world number one has struggled with all manner of injuries over the last couple of years but a successful return to tour at Queen’s last time out was a welcome sight. World number 119 Murray has a total of 46 ATP titles to his name so far with his last biggest achievement winning the ATP Finals in 2016, his best year on tour.
THE PREDICTION
34-year-old Andy Murray’s return to Wimbledon will be an emotional rollercoaster after the British favourite drew an exceptionally tough first round opponent. Whilst world number 28 Basilashvili can often blow hot and cold, the Georgian is a fierce competitor capable of beating anybody on his day. In fact, Basilashvili was the man who stopped Roger Federer’s first return this season at the Qatar Open before the 29-year-old went on to win his fourth ATP title there. Basilashvili will be bale to find his best form for this first meeting with Murray and his recent exploits at the Halle Open make him the favourite here. However, Murray equally remains an unquantifiable anomaly in this draw and he should be able to make this interesting throughout. Take the two-time Wimbledon champion to win at least a set in this crunch match.
