Marin Cilic ended a three-year wait for an ATP Tour title success as he claimed the victory in the recent Mercedes Cup and while he was unable to build on that at Queen’s, he will be full of confidence coming into this year’s showpiece on grass. The big-serving Croat is a former Wimbledon runner-up and his form of late will have lifted a big weight off his shoulders as he prepares for another tilt at earning a second career Grand Slam. His performance in Stuttgart was extremely eye-catching as he went through the tournament without dropping a set and despite being knocked out in the quarter-finals at Queen’s, the 32-year-old has shown enough to suggest he could be in for a big campaign.
SALVATORE CARUSO
World number 96 Salvatore Caruso lost in the first round of the Mallorca Championships for his only grass court practices ahead of Wimbledon. The Italian reached a career-high 76th in the ATP world rankings last November after a solid hard court season and unlike most of his compatriots he will be glad to get off the clay. 28-year-old Caruso has reached the third round of two Grand Slams at Roland-Garros in 2019 and the US Open last season but he has yet to win a match at Wimbledon.
THE PREDICTION
World number 37 Marin Cilic has made the final here at Wimbledon as a payer who loves the grass and his recent win at the MercedesCup in Stuttgart saw him at his most comfortable. The big-serving Croat has the potential to go deep into this tournament with his fitness still excellent at 32 years old and he has been granted a fairly kind opener in Salvatore Caruso. In what will be their first meeting, Caruso is likely to be combative but ultimately overpowered by the former world number three. Still, Caruso has enough about him to make this tricky at the key moments and Cilic can occasionally take his eye off the prize long enough to drop a set.
