THE LOWDOWN

MARCO CECCHINATO

The 28-year-old Italian comes into Wimbledon this year hoping to pick up his win at the tournament after his three previous visits all saw him depart in the first round. Cecchinato is far more comfortable on clay than grass and while he has registered some good wins at the French Open and on clay, he has struggled at all the other Grand Slam events and on other surfaces. He opted out of any of the warm-up tournaments on grass and has not played since Roland Garros so it is hard to see him excelling this time around neither.

LIAM BROADY

The Stockport-native will have the locals on side in this match as he looks to reach the second round for just the second time. His first and only win at Wimbledon came back in 2015 when he came from two sets down to beat Marinko Matosevic and he will have to show similar fight here. His performances in Nottingham and at Queen’s have not been overly convincing but he has some playing time on grass under his belt which he will have to hope benefit him against Cecchinato.

THE PREDICTION

Liam Broady returns to Wimbledon to face Marco Cecchinato hoping the home support will drive him on to just a second win in the tournament for him. That is one more than what Cecchinato has however and while the Italian has more pedigree and is the better player overall, that is not necessarily the case on this surface. Cecchinato has struggled badly on grass and has not participated in any of the warm-up tournaments so Broady will fancy his chances. The Englishman has to be fancied to get the win but look for both players to win a set.
