THE LOWDOWN

MARCELO BARRIOS

The 23-year-old Chilean fought his way through three qualifying rounds to reach his first Grand Slam first round of his career. The right-hander is currently at his highest ever world ranking position at 210 and while there is no real expectation on him here, his confidence will be sky high after some good performances in the last couple of weeks.

KEVIN ANDERSON

2018 runner-up Kevin Anderson returns to Wimbledon where he has enjoyed some of the best moments of his career, but the 35-year-old South African has not been enjoying the best of seasons so far in 2021. He was knocked out in Nottingham in the last of 32 last week by Denis Kudla in a disappointing performance and he will have to improve significantly if he is to make the second week at Wimbledon.

THE PREDICTION

Kevin Anderson is showing signs of slowing down in 2021 and the level of his performances have not been great. He does have fond memories at Wimbledon however and he faces relative unknown newcomer Marcelo Barrios in this opening round. The Chilean has good pedigree and will be confident and probably sharper than Anderson after having come through three qualifying rounds. Ultimately though he will likely struggle with Anderson’s serve and the giant South African should have far too much quality for the 23-year-old. Expect Anderson to win in straight sets.
