THE LOWDOWN

MARC POLMANS

24-year-old Aussie Marc Polmans makes his main draw debut having come through the qualifying rounds. He has failed to get to this stage on three previous occasions so Polmans will be fired up to do well with Wimbledon being the only Grand Slam event he has yet to play a first-round match in. He did play both weeks at Nottingham to get some playing time on grass under his belt but he lost both matches so he will need to step up here to have a chance of winning.

YEN-HSUN LU

The Chinese Taipei native comes into Wimbledon at the age of 37 and he makes his first appearance in the main draw since 2017. Lu’s best ever performance in any Grand Slam came back in 2010 when he reached the Wimbledon quarter-finals and he will be looking to rekindle that form. In truth, he has not come anywhere close to achieving that in any of the Grand Slam events and he has failed to progress from the second round in his last six appearances. He has had a tough season so far but has played some quality opponents and Lu will be confident of progressing to round two here.

THE PREDICTION

This clash is very much a case of veteran versus young pretender and it is the 37-year-old Lu who will fancy his chances on grass. He has a solid record at Wimbledon and while he has not enjoyed much success of late, he is still competing at a good level. His defeats this year have come against Fabio Fognini, Diego Schwartzmann, Daniil Medvedev and Reilly Opelka while he has a win over Sam Querrey under his belt. Polmans’ opponents do not come anywhere near that level and while he has youth on his side, we are going with the veteran to know his way around SW19 sufficiently to get the win.
