LUCAS POUILLE
World number 96 Lucas Pouille has seriously struggled with injuries for the best part of two years now but the Frenchman has managed to scrape together a 3-6 record in 2021. The 27-year-old reached a career-high 10th in the ATP world rankings back in 2018 and whilst that looks a tough pinnacle to reach again he is capable of breaking back into the top 30. Pouille has five ATP titles to his name but perhaps his best achievement to date is reaching the semi-finals of the Australian Open in 2019.
CAMERON NORRIE
Cam Norrie reached a career-high 34th in the ATP world rankings last weekend as he lost to Matteo Berrettini in the final of the Queen’s Club Championships. The British number two will be seeded at a Grand Slam for the first time here and comes in with the third-most wins on tour with a 29-13 record behind only Andrey Rublev and Stefanos Tsitsipas. 25-year-old Norrie has lost three finals on tour this season with defeats to Tsitsipas at the Lyon Open and Albert Ramos-Vinolas at the Estoril Open.
THE PREDICTION
There will be a buzzing sense of real possibility around British number two Cam Norrie at Wimbledon this year in what has been his best year on tour. The 25-year-old has reached three finals this season including on grass at Queen’s Club but it is his 29/13 record for the year that is most impressive. Norrie has found a way to bring excellent consistency to a tricky, dangerous game and with it he has beaten 10 players inside the top 30. The left-hander will be tested early-on by Lucas Pouille but over five sets it is unlikely that the Frenchman will be able to withstand the constant pressure. Pouille was the winner in their only previous encounter over four sets at Roland-Garros in 2018 but take Norrie to level things here as the outright winner.
