29-year-old Kristie Ahn made it through to the main draw at Wimbledon as a lucky loser after losing to Monica Niculescu in the third round of qualifying last Friday. The American has a pretty poor record for 2021 with just two wins from 12 on tour so far but it would not take too much of a run to reach her career-high of 87th in the WTA world rankings. Ahn made a famous run to the round of 16 of the US Open in 2019 before losing to Elise Mertens but otherwise she has lost in the first round of her other five Grand Slam campaigns.
HEATHER WATSON
29-year-old Heather Watson is a well-loved player at Wimbledon with plenty of memories made here over the years in front of adoring crowds. When the current world number 68 is at her best she is a superbly talented player and certainly suited to the big stage as her three third round placings at Wimbledon suggest. Watson has four WTA titles to her name on her favoured hard surface and she also won the Mixed Doubles event at SW19 alongside Finland’s Henri Kontinen in 2016, finishing runner-up a year later. Watson made the semi-finals of the Birmingham Classic two weeks ago and also lost in a well-contested thriller last week to Iga Swiatek at the Eastbourne International.
THE PREDICTION
The Wimbledon crowd will fill Court 18 for Heather Watson’s first match back since 2019 and the Guernsey islander saves her best performances for this Grand Slam. Watson famously took a set off Serena Williams in the third round back in the American’s pomp in 2015 and if the draw continues to be kind to the 29-year-old she has a great chance at emulating her personal best here in the Singles. Kristie Ahn knows the feeling having gone to the last 16 at the US Open in her own backyard but her form this season, including her lucky loser status from the qualifiers, suggests that this could be a fairly straightforward one. Take Watson to win outright on Monday afternoon.
