KATIE SWAN
22-year-old Katie Swan beat three tough competitors in the Wimbledon qualifiers to reach the main draw for just a fourth time. In what Swan has called her ‘biggest accomplishment’ yet, the current world number 292 reached a career-high 163rd in the WTA world rankings back in 2018 as a teenager but she has struggled with several injuries since then. Swan has only played Grand Slam matches at Wimbledon and she reached the second round once in 2017.
MADISON KEYS
Former world number seven Madison Keys has struggled with form and fitness this season but the American showed signs of improvement at the German Open. Keys lost to eventual champion Ludmilla Samsonova in the quarter-finals there but did beat the top seed Aryna Sabalenka over three sets in the round before that. The current world number 26 has reached at least the quarter-final in each of the four Grand Slams including Wimbledon in 2015. 26-year-old Keys lost in the final of the US Open in 2017 to fellow American Sloane Stephens.
THE PREDICTION
Katie Swan will have been disappointed not to receive a wildcard to Wimbledon this season but her performances in the qualifiers could actually be a big aid for her chances here and for the rest of the year. She will be well supported by a partisan crowd on Monday morning on Court 3 and Madison Keys will have to cope with that early-on and throughout. However, the American is a former Grand Slam finalist and her pedigree on the biggest stage should eventually tell in this first meeting between the two. Swan is an anomaly and if she plays fearlessly this could be closer than it should be but Keys is experienced enough to know how to beat her and the crowd. Take Keys to win outright here in what should be an emotional watch on Monday morning.
