KAROLINA PLISKOVA
World number 13 Karolina Pliskova has struggled for form of late since losing 6-0, 6-0 to Iga Swiatek in the Italian Open final last month. The Czech was the defending champion in Rome and entered the Eastbourne International as the defending champion from 2019 too but she lost from a set up to in-form Camila Giorgi in the first round. 29-year-old Pliskova reached the final of the 2016 US Open and the semi-finals of both the Australian Open and Roland-Garros but she has struggled at Wimbledon.
TAMARA ZIDANSEK
World number 47 Tamara Zidansek has not played a match on grass in preparation for Wimbledon after taking some time off following her incredible run to the Roland-Garros semi-finals. The 23-year-old beat Bianca Andreescu in the first round of the French Open and never looked back until a resolute Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova finally got the better of her in the semis and she could be one to watch at Wimbledon. The Slovenian is making just her second appearance at SW19 where she made the second round.
THE PREDICTION
This looks like a candidate for the ‘upset’ category on Monday at Wimbledon with world number 13 Karolina Pliskova really struggling for motivation on court. Pliskova is on a three-match losing streak since defeat to Sloane Stephens in the second round of Roland-Garros and Zidansek enjoyed a stand-out campaign in Paris which makes this a very intriguing first meeting between them. Pliskova is usually an excellent grass-court competitor and she should still be the favourite to come through this on merit and experience but 23-year-old Zidansek is an unknown entity. It remains to be seen if taking a break after reaching the Roland-Garros semi-finals is a good idea or a bad one seeing as she has not played on grass yet but take Pliskova to win at least a set here as the likeliest winner from a tough pick.
