JOHN ISNER
World number 33 John Isner has been selective with the tournaments he has entered but the American veteran still has a healthy 9-5 record for 2021. The 36-year-old reached the quarter-finals of the Madrid Open via some impressive performances and he will be a dangerous opponent to draw in the first week here. Isner’s best Grand Slam showing came in 2018 at Wimbledon where he lost in five sets to Kevin Anderson in the semi-finals.
YOSHIHITO NISHIOKA
It has been a somewhat frustrating campaign for Yoshihito Nishioka having made it to the quarter-finals of three ATP Tour events but failing to progress beyond that. In what will be his fourth appearance at Wimbledon, the 25-year-old will be seeking his first success having lost in the first round of all three of his efforts so far. He is also yet to win on grass on the ATP Tour so getting off the mark here would be deemed as a success.
THE PREDICTION
This is such a fascinating mismatch between pace and power. 36-year-old John Isner makes a welcome return to the Grand Slam he has enjoyed the most success so far and faces Yoshihito Nishioka for a second time. The Japanese lefty is a fun player to watch full of tricks and capable of chasing down every ball, although Isner’s serve may be a step too far in that respect. Nishioka is well capable of taking a set over five here in the first round, particularly as neither player has found the time to get a match on grass yet. However, Isner was the winner in three sets in their last meeting back in 2017 and despite his age the American is still fit enough to go the distance with the 25-year-old. Isner to win outright here is a solid option and as always with the big-serving veteran you could add at least a tiebreak in the match.
