JANNIK SINNER
19-year-old Jannik Sinner reached a career-high 17th in the ATP world rankings after reaching the round of 16 at Roland-Garros. The Italian lost in two tough tiebreaks to fellow 19-year-old Jack Draper at Queen’s Club last week in his first grass match since 2019. Now world number 23, Sinner has two ATP titles to his name so far and he finished runner-up at the Miami Masters on his debut back in April. The teenager is making his main draw debut at Wimbledon as a seed after rising more than 50 ATP places since last August.
MARTON FUCSOVICS
After a good start to the year where he made the final of the Rotterdam Open, Marton Fucsovics has struggled for form of late and he will be eager to turn it around at Wimbledon. He lost out to Ugo Humbert in his seasonal debut on the grass at Stuttgart recently and with a career record of 4-10 on the surface, it does not bode well for him here. He is 17-16 in Grand Slam matches in his career but is only 1-3 at Wimbledon so just making it through to the second round might be deemed a success.
THE PREDICTION
It is no secret that Marton Fucsovics is a hard-working, dogged competitor best-suited to hard courts but the Hungarian has plenty of potential to do well on this surface. Also, despite his debut at Wimbledon as a seed, this could be the best moment of 2021 to face Jannik Sinner. The teenager lost in the first round of Queen’s Club to 19-year-old Jack Draper and looked a little nonplussed on grass. Sinner also struggled to get through his first few matches at Roland-Garros before reaching the quarter-finals and Fucsovics will be looking there for inspiration. The pair have a win apiece against each other, with Fucsovics the winner in their previous Grand Slam meeting at the 2020 Australian Open. Sinner should be winning this outright but take both players to win a set in what could be a thrilling first round match.
