IGA SWIATEK
World number nine Iga Swiatek was beaten in the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros as the defending champion from 2020 by Maria Sakkari. The Polish number one played out a thrilling three-set victory with Heather Watson at the Eastbourne International but was beaten in the next round by Daria Kasatkina. 20-year-old Swiatek won her first Masters event at the Italian Open last month, handing two bagels to defending champion Karolina Pliskova in a 6-0, 6-0 whitewash. The Pole’s best Grand Slam showing outside of her favoured clay is two round of 16 placings at the Australian Open.
SU-WEI HSIEH
World number 66 Su-Wei Hsieh is a well-loved character on the WTA tour but she has struggled for form on tour this season with a 6/9 record. However, amongst that record was her best ever run at a Grand Slam as she reached the quarter-finals of the Australian Open. The Chinese Taipei player reached a career high of 23rd in the WTA world rankings back in 2013 and she has three titles on her name so far.
THE PREDICTION
Given that we lost Wimbledon in 2020, World number nine Iga Swiatek is a relative unknown as a grass player and it will be exciting to see how the Pole fares. The 20-year-old lost in the first round back in 2019 but will be seeded seventh in her second campaign and this first meeting with Hsieh is a kind one. The 35-year-old is an enigma at the best of times and capable of causing upsets form anywhere but Swiatek’s power should be too much. Swiatek lost in the quarter-finals to Maria Sakkari via what looked like a small injury but if she can stay fit this fortnight she has to be considered a dark horse for a second Grand Slam title. Take the Pole to come through this in straight sets in what could end up less than an hour.
