GUIDO PELLA
Guido Pella has slipped down the world rankings having made it up to 20 towards the back end of 2019. The Argentine has struggled with his fitness and form and it is little surprise he now finds himself down at 59th in the world. The 31-year-old suffered first-round losses in Stuttgart and Halle with his preparation for Wimbledon not going to plan. In fact, he has won just three matches on the ATP Tour all year but he will hope to rekindle the form he showed here back in 2019 when he made the quarter-finals.
MATTEO BERRETTINI
World number nine Matteo Berrettini won his fifth career title last weekend by beating Cam Norrie in the Queen’s Club final. The Queen’s title win was Berrettini’s first title at ATP 500 level and his first on grass with many touting him for a deep run at Wimbledon now. 25-year-old Berrettini also won the Serbia Open earlier this year and finished runner-up at the Madrid Masters, both on clay. Italian number one Berrettini’s best showing at a Grand Slam so far was a semi-final loss to Rafael Nadal at the 2019 US Open.
THE PREDICTION
It has been a troubling year for Guido Pella as the Argentine’s struggles with fitness continue and it will be worth holding off this match until confirmed. If Pella takes to court he could find some extra motivation back at the home of the best period of his career after he made it all the way to the 2019 quarter-finals. Pella beat back-to-back big servers Kevin Anderson and Milos Raonic in 2019 but he is far from his best and faces a similar big-server in Matteo Berrettini for the first time. The Italian is in the form of his life and he should be targeting the quarter-finals at least this campaign after winning Queen’s. Plenty of hype will surround the world number nine this fortnight and he should be able to come through this in three.
