FRANCESCA JONES
20-year-old Francesca Jones has not won a match since an ITF event April but she will be well-supported and up for any challenge on her debut at Wimbledon. The world number 210 earned a wildcard to what will be just her second Grand Slam campaign after losing in the first round of the Australian Open earlier this year. Jones has a strong 14/11 record for the season after plenty of success on the ITF circuit but just one WTA tour-level victory in 2021 so far.
COCO GAUFF
Teenage star Coco Gauff beat the seventh seed Elise Mertens on grass at the Eastbourne International last week before losing in the round of 16. 17-year-old Gauff rose to fame at Wimbledon in 2019 by beating Venus Williams in the first round and the teenage star has not looked back since. Now at a career-high world number 23, Gauff claimed her second of two WTA titles with a win at the Emilia Romagna Open on clay last month. Having reached the round of 16 at Wimbledon on debut in 2019, the American went one better with a quarter-final exit at Roland-Garros earlier this month.
THE PREDICTION
Coco Gauff announced herself to the world stage at Wimbledon in 2019 by beating Venus Williams in the first round and going on to reach the round of 16. Since then she has also made the second week at the Australian Open and put in her best showing so far earlier this month with a run to the quarter-finals at Roland-Garros. Gauff is facing a Brit in the first round but such is her star quality she will likely still garner the vast majority of the support. The pair have not played at tour level but it is worth noting that Gauff beat Jones in straight sets in qualifying in Adelaide earlier this year. Even though she is still impossibly young to be this good, the 17-year-old will be seeded for a reason here and should blast through this first match in straight sets.
