THE LOWDOWN
FIONA FERRO
World number 51 Fiona Ferro lost in the first round of the Birmingham Classic and in the Eastbourne International qualifiers which will have been disappointing grass court practice. The Frenchwoman has struggled for consistency this season despite reaching a career-high 39th in the WTA world rankings back in March. 24-year-old Ferro’s best Grand Slam showing is reaching the round of 16 at Roland-Garros last year but she has never got past the first round at Wimbledon. She has two WTA titles to her name won at the Palermo Open last season and in Lausanne in 2019 but Ferro also won the 2019 Fed Cup with France.
GARBINE MUGURUZA
Two-time Grand Slam champion Garbine Muguruza won Wimbledon in 2017 a year after winning her first major at Roland-Garros. The world number 13 claimed her eighth career title this season at the Dubai Open but since then the Spaniard has struggled with form and fitness. 27-year-old Muguruza will be more dangerous at Wimbledon with each passing round but likely requires a kind first week in the draw to get her rhythm up and running.
THE PREDICTION
Coached by Conchita Martinez, Garbine Muguruza is seeded 11th at Wimbledon and could go very deep into this tournament with only a little spark needed. The Spaniard has excellent Grand Slam pedigree but currently can only show her best in small fits and bursts. Muguruza reached the Australian Open final in 2020 so she knows that she is still able to reach those heights and she has enjoyed most of her success at Wimbledon. 27-year-old Muguruza was the winner in their only previous encounter back in 2018 on clay and Ferro has provided little recent evidence to suggest anything different will happen this time. Muguruza should be winning this in straight sets but it is safer simply to opt for an outright win at this early stage.
