FELIX AUGER-ALIASSIME
World number 19 Felix Auger-Aliassime reached a career-high 17th in the ATP world rankings as a teenager after an excellent 2019 season. The Canadian was stopped in the third round in 2019 on debut by Ugo Humbert, who also beat him in the semi-finals of the Halle Open last week. Now 20 years old, Auger-Aliassime has reached an incredible eight ATP finals without yet winning a title. Auger-Aliassime did, though, win the 2020 Paris Masters Men’s Doubles title with Hubert Hurkacz. The pair reached the Halle Open final last week and could well join forces to great effect at Wimbledon.
THIAGO MONTEIRO
27-year-old Thiago Monteiro will come into Wimbledon cold on the grass after taking a break following a second round loss at Roland-Garros. The Brazilian is of course most naturally suited to the clay but he has occasionally found form on other surfaces, including a strong run to the semi-finals of the Great Ocean Road Open in Melbourne this year. Monteiro reached a career-high 74th in the ATP world rankings back in 2017 but is currently not far off at world number 81. His best Grand Slam showing is reaching the third round of Roland-Garros last season.
THE PREDICTION
This is the second career meeting between Felix-Auger-Aliassime and Thiago Monteiro and the second in the first round of a Grand Slam after the Canadian came through a stern test in four sets at the 2020 US Open. That score included three tiebreaks and perfectly showcases what Monteiro is about as a steady, precise baseline battler capable of absorbing pressure. However, 20-year-old Auger-Aliassime has long been spoken of as a natural fit for the grass since he made the third round on his debut in 2019 and he should be targeting nothing less than the second week this campaign. The world number 19 should be winning this in straight sets but inside an accumulator soften that to an outright victory.
