FABIO FOGNINI
World number 31 Fabio Fognini has struggled for consistent form all season long and failed to defend his Monte-Carlo Open title which was his last in 2019. The firebrand Italian lost in the round of 16 to Marin Cilic at Queen’s Club last time out on a surface he has historically struggled on. 34-year-old Fognini infamously made inflammatory comments in a third round defeat at Wimbledon 2019 which remains the furthest he has gone at this Grand Slam.
ALBERT RAMOS-VINOLAS
With first-round losses in both the Australian Open and French Open, Albert Ramos-Vinolas will hope to put his 2021 Grand Slam disappointment behind him at Wimbledon. He claimed his third ATP Tour title earlier in the year, but all three of those successes have come on the clay and he does not like the grass, as his 6-13 record highlights. His limited outings on this surface compared to clay (299 matches) and hard court (173 matches) gives an insight into what his mind-set will be like coming into this. Having lost in the first round at Queen’s recently, it could be a short stay for the Spaniard.
THE PREDICTION
This is a really intriguing match-up at Wimbledon between two players out of their comfort zones on the grass. 34-year-old Fabio Fognini leads their head-to-head record healthily 8-2, including their only meeting on grass at Eastbourne way back in 2012 but that does not mean this will be easy. Albert Ramos-Vinolas has enjoyed a successful season so far having won his third ATP title and he has won the previous two matches against Fognini. Considering it often takes the Italian a little time to get going these days, the probability of Ramos-Vinolas taking at least a set here seem likely. Therefore, take Fognini to win and both players to win a set in what has some of the hallmarks for a potential five-setter.
