THE LOWDOWN

EKATERINA ALEXANDROVA

World number 35 Ekaterina Alexandrova made it through to the quarter-finals of the German Open over a week ago before losing to Belinda Bencic in three. The Russian reached a career-high 20th in the WTA world rankings last season after winning the Shenzhen Open in January, her only title to date. So far the 26-year-old’s best Grand Slam showings are reaching the third rounds of both the Australian Open and Roland-Garros.

LAURA SIEGEMUND

33-year-old German Laura Siegemund picked up her first-ever win at Wimbledon in her last appearance in 2019 as she beat Katie Swan. Otherwise, she has struggled to make much of an impact in the singles competition at SW19. Her best performances have come in the Doubles where she won the US Open in 2020 with her partner Vera Zvonareva. This however is a tough assignment and she has typically fallen short when coming up against quality opposition especially at Wimbledon.

THE PREDICTION

Ekaterina Alexandrova and Laura Siegemund meet in the first round at Wimbledon and the Russian will fancy her chances of getting through this one. Neither of them have particularly excelled on grass nor at Wimbledon but Alexandrova’s performances at the German Open last week suggest she has some form behind her. Siegemund will be competitive but it is hard to make a case for her here and a straight-sets defeat is on the cards.
