THE LOWDOWN

EGOR GERASIMOV

Belarussian 28-year-old Egor Gerasimov comes into this event having made it to the first round for the first time in his career having lost in the qualifying rounds in the last three events. His form has been abysmal however in recent weeks having suffered six consecutive defeats and it will take some improvement if he is to have any chance of beating Clarke and grabbing his first win at Wimbledon.

JAY CLARKE

22-year-old Brit Jay Clarke will be looking to build on his first singles victory in the 2019 tournament and he has enjoyed some great moments at Wimbledon despite his short career. His win over Noah Rubin was all the better given he lost the first set but after beating the American, Clarke then earned the right to face legend Roger Federer in the second round where he duly lost. He has produced some good performances and victories in both doubles competitions but he will be eager to get through this first round in the singles.

THE PREDICTION

It is Egor Gerasimov that comes into this match as favourite but Jay Clarke will fancy his chances of getting another win at Wimbledon. Clarke may not have the pedigree and experience that Gerasimov has but he has enjoyed some good moments at Wimbledon which will give him something of an advantage. If Clarke does not get the win, he will be competitive so that makes the 4/9 odds on both players to win a set to be particularly enticing. That said, there is value on Clarke too as an underdog and he is worth consideration given how poor Gerasimov has been of late.
