DIEGO SCHWARTZMAN
World number 11 Diego Schwartzman has fell back from a career-high eighth in the ATP world rankings after some inconsistent form this season. The Argentine is a world-class competitor on clay but whilst he is capable on all surfaces he has struggled at Wimbledon in the past. 28-year-old Schwartzman has made the quarter-finals in three of his last six Grand Slam campaigns, losing to Rafael Nadal on each occasion. His best showing so far is reaching the semi-finals of Roland-Garros in 2020 via an incredible five-set quarter-final victory against Dominic Thiem.
BENOIT PAIRE
It has been a fairly wretched campaign for Frenchman Benoit Paire so far with just two wins from 18 matches. That form will have to change drastically if he is to avoid an early exit at Wimbledon but having suffered a first-round exit in each of his last five events, the latest of which came against Andy Murray at Queen’s, the Frenchman has it all to do. He is yet to win in either of his two Grand Slam outings this year too and a third straight first round loss could well be on the cards.
THE PREDICTION
World number 46 Benoit Paire is having a season to forget but the Frenchman’s luxurious hand skills are still there below the surface of perhaps a motivational crisis. He shares a 1-1 head-to-head record with Diego Schwartzman both played in their favoured surface clay and both settled in three sets. Schwartzman is by no means a one trick pony but he has struggled on grass compared to other surfaces. However, his work rate over five sets should be too much for Paire’s current weak spirit and although the Frenchman is well capable of taking a set or two this looks like a solid outright win for Schwartzman. The world number 11 should be targeting a personal best at Wimbledon of reaching the round of 16 this campaign.
