THE LOWDOWN
DENIS SHAPOVALOV
World number 12 Denis Shapovalov showed great potential on grass at the Queen’s Club Championships last time out but lost in the semi-finals to Cam Norrie. 22-year-old Shapovalov is well-capable of a deep run in any tournament but so far has just one ATP title to his name from the 2019 Stockholm Open. The Canadian is a winners’ machine but also makes more mistakes than just about anybody on tour and he desperately needs more consistency. Shapovalov’s best Grand Slam showing to date was reaching the 2020 US Open where he lost a five-set epic to Pablo Carreno Busta.
PHILIP KOHLSCHREIBER
Even at the age of 37, Philip Kohlschreiber continues to compete at a good level but he has been handed a tough opening draw at Wimbledon against Shapovalov. The Austrian reached the quarter-finals in 2012 but that performance is easily the standout of his Wimbledon career as otherwise he has nine first-round losses since 2015. He will have been happy with a couple of good wins on grass at Halle in the build-up to Wimbledon but he will need to raise his game another level here.
THE PREDICTION
An intriguing matchup lies in store here as talented young Canadian Denis Shapovalov meets Austrian veteran Philip Kohlschreiber in the first round. So much depends on which version of Shapovalov turns up but he is playing some reasonably good tennis right now so he will be understandably confident. It is not beyond the realms of possibility that Kohlschreiber takes a set off him but Shapovalov should have too much for him here and the Canadian should progress.
