31-year-old Daniel Evans will enter Wimbledon as a seed for the first time after reaching a career-high 25th in the ATP world rankings earlier this month. Now world number 26, the British number one reached the quarter-finals of the Queen’s Club Championships before losing to eventual winner Matteo Berrettini. Evans won his first ATP title in Melbourne at the start of the year and famously beat world number one Novak Djokovic on the way to the semi-finals of the Monte-Carlo Masters back in April.
FELICIANO LOPEZ
World number 90 Feliciano Lopez is a well-loved veteran at 39-year-old who reached a career-high 12th in the ATP world rankings in 2015. The Spaniard lost in the quarter-finals of the Mallorca Championships last time out and the round of 16 at Queen’s over a week ago as the defending champion there as build-up to Wimbledon. Four of his total seven ATP titles have come on grass. Lopez has reached the quarter-finals of Wimbledon on three occasions, losing to Lleyton Hewitt in 2015, Marat Safin in 2008 and Andy Murray in 2011. Owner of one of the game’s silkiest one-handed backhands, Lopez has never made it further than the last eight at any Grand Slam.
THE PREDICTION
This will be a glorious match to behold between two of the silkiest players on tour right now in world number 25 Dan Evans and number 90 Feliciano Lopez. As 39-year-old Lopez’ career winds down now his ATP ranking is not reflective of his quality and he was perhaps unlucky to lose in the quarter-finals in Mallorca. This match will be all about Evans, though, as the 31-year-old has enjoyed his best year on tour to date. Evans won his first ATP title this year but has expressed his determination for a better run at the majors this season. This could go all the way if both players bring their best and despite Lopez leading their head-to-head record 1-0 the tides have turned from 2016.
