ASLAN KARATSEV
27-year-old Aslan Karatsev exploded into form at the beginning of 2021 to remarkably reach the Australian Open semi-finals as a qualifying debutant. In doing so, he became the first male player to reach the semi-finals of a Grand Slam on debut in the Open Era. Karatsev is at a career-high 24th in the ATP world rankings after winning his first ATP title at the Dubai Open earlier this season and registering a 23-10 record so far. The Russian also won the second ATP Cup at the start of the year as part of Team Russia.
JEREMY CHARDY
World number 61 Jeremy Chardy enjoyed a renaissance in his career at 34 years old at the start of the season having reached four quarter-finals and a further two semi-finals on hard courts. The Frenchman is less comfortable on the clay and his progress has slowed considerably but he will still be a tricky opponent on grass and a popular one with the crowds. The Frenchman will be a tough draw alongside compatriot Fabrice Martin in the Men’s Doubles but he has struggled in recent years to get past the first round of Grand Slams.
THE PREDICTION
This first meeting between Aslan Karatsev and Jeremy Chardy will be an interesting battle that could well see four or even five sets on Tuesday. Karatsev exploded onto the scene in a way we have not seen for some time by reaching the semi-finals of the Australian Open from obscurity but he is making a tournament debut here as the 20th seed. Chardy has failed to win the first match in each of his last five Grand Slam campaigns but his plight has not been helped by consistently drawing very tough opening matches. The Frenchman has drawn four players inside the top 15 in the first round and Karatsev is not far off that at world number 24. Karatsev is a fairly unknown quantity on this surface whilst Chardy is a seasoned all-court competitor capable of testing the Russian throughout. Take Karatsev to win outright here with Chardy likely to force at least a tiebreak.
