ASHLEIGH BARTY
World number one Ashleigh Barty will start her Wimbledon campaign off without any grass court practice after an injury in the second round of Roland-Garros. The 25-year-old won the 2019 Roland-Garros title which remains her only Grand Slam title to date. Barty has 11 titles in total after winning three this season at the Yarra Valley Classic, Miami Open and Stuttgart Open. The Australian has never made it past the round of 16 at Wimbledon but she should be targeting the semi-finals here at least.
CARLA SUAREZ NAVARRO
Former world number six Carla Suarez Navarro will make an emotional return to Wimbledon after recovering from Hodgkin’s Lymphoma this past year. The 32-year-old will play just her second match on tour this season after a first round exit from Roland-Garros. Currently world number 138, Suarez Navarro has two WTA titles to her name but the Spaniard has enjoyed plenty of success at Grand Slams. Suarez Navarro has reached seven quarter-finals across the US Open, Australian Open and Roland-Garros but is yet to make it past the round of 16 here.
THE PREDICTION
This could be a really tricky first match back for world number one Ashleigh Barty after her injury lay-off. The Australian was forced to retire from Roland-Garros earlier this month which remains her only Grand Slam title to date but she certainly has the game to win Wimbledon this year. Carla Suarez Navarro is a popular player on the WTA tour and she will be backed well on her journey back from cancer survival. The Spaniard should realistically lose in two here but given the outside factors it is advisable to take 25-year-old Barty as the outright winner. Barty has a superb chance this campaign given the loss of Simona Halep and Naomi Osaka but her fitness will be a question mark until this match takes place.
