Promising young talent Ann Li will be making her debut in the main draw at Wimbledon and got some decent preparation in at the Bad Homburg Open recently when she took Petra Kvitova – the number one seed in that event – to three sets in the round of 16. The 21-year-old American has been making great strides recently and clearly has a bright future ahead of her.
NADIA PODOROSKA
Nadia Podoroska is up to a career-high 39th in the WTA world rankings after her best season on tour yet culminated in a straight-sets victory over Serena Williams at the Italian Open. The Argentine has yet to win a title on tour but she has plenty of promise and she reached the quarter-finals of the Bad Homburg Open last week on grass. 24-year-old Podoroska has yet to make her debut at Wimbledon but she reached the semi-finals of Roland-Garros last season.
THE PREDICTION
This promises to be a fascinating contest between two players who are currently at or very near the highest world ranking of their careers – Podoroska at 39 and Li at 72. Both are making their debuts at Wimbledon but Podoroska has already shown she can go deep at a Grand Slam having been a surprise semi-finalist at the French Open last year. Whether or not she can replicate that at Wimbledon remains to be seen, but she did reach impress at the Bad Homburg Open on grass recently and looks to have the game to excel on the surface. Both Podoroska and Li lost close games to Petra Kvitova at that tournament, and that tells us that this should also be competitive so backing this one to go to three sets is the tip.
