The veteran Italian Andreas Seppi returns to Wimbledon at a venue which has been kind to him in recent years. Seppi’s record is somewhat underrated and he has only failed to progress from the first round on two of his last 14 appearances at SW19. The 37-year-old continues to compete well and is enjoying a solid season with his recent performances in Nottingham serving as good preparation for Wimbledon.
JOAO SOUSA
Joao Sousa enjoyed his best ever performance at Wimbledon at the last event held back in 2019 when he made it to the fourth round. Sousa picked up a tremendous straight-sets win over Marin Cilic before losing to Rafa Nadal but that equalled his best ever achievement in a Grand Slam. The Portuguese 32-year-old has been somewhat hit-and-miss this season but he will take confidence from the last time he was at Wimbledon.
THE PREDICTION
Andreas Seppi and Joao Sousa meet in the first round at Wimbledon in what looks to be one of the more evenly-matched ties on paper. They have met on five previous occasions with Sousa winning the three and Seppi winning two, but they have never met on grass. It is Seppi who has the better track record on grass and with some reasonable performances in recent weeks in Nottingham, he is marginally favoured to get the win and progress to the second round.
