ALIZE CORNET
World number 56 Alize Cornet has enjoyed some success on grass this month. The Frenchwoman made it to the semi-finals of the German Open before defeat to Belinda Bencic and she came close in a loss to Victoria Azarenka in the round of 16 at the Bad Homburg Open. Cornet reached a career-high 11th in the WTA world rankings back in 2009 and she has six WTA titles to her name so far. The 31-year-old has reached the round of 16 in all four Grand Slams but never further.
BIANCA ANDREESCU
World number seven Bianca Andreescu has struggled with injuries for some time now and she was forced to retire from the final of the Miami Open in April. More recently she has slowly come back to fitness but she lost in the round of 16 to Anett Kontaveit at the Eastbourne International last time out. The 21-year-old famously stormed to victory at the 2019 US Open on her debut but otherwise she has not made it past the second round of any Grand Slam campaign. The Canadian is a fierce competitor likely to draw crowds to her support here if she can get some momentum.
THE PREDICTION
The toughest opponent Bianca Andreescu will face for some time at Wimbledon is her own fitness, especially in the earlier rounds. With the WTA exceptionally strong right now there are very few easy matches on the body and world number seven Andreescu is prone to the occasional injury. The Canadian won the US Open on her debut and will have struggled with the resulting expectation for some time, though she looks ready to return to the very top of the game. As a dark horse for the title, she will have to keep her wits about here against Alize Cornet but realistically this match should be Andreescu’s in two.
