ALIAKSANDRA SASNOVICH
World number 100 Aliaksandra Sasnovich has a 11/11 record for 2021 after a couple of quarter-finals at the Serbia Open and the Saint-Malo Open on clay. The Belarusian reached a career-high 30th in the WTA world rankings back in 2018 after reaching her second of two finals but she has yet to win a title. 27-year-old Sasnovich has had mixed results at Grand Slams but her best showing came at Wimbledon in 2018 where she reached the round of 16.
SERENA WILLIAMS
23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams is targeting an eighth Wimbledon title here and that elusive 24th overall that would bring her level with Margaret Court. The 39-year-old was knocked out of the round of 16 at Roland-Garros last time out but she is better-suited to other surfaces and she reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open. The former world number one has reached the past two Wimbledon finals and each of the last four in which she has entered, winning in 2015 and 2016.
THE PREDICTION
As top seeds continue to fall from the Women’s draw at Wimbledon, and much the same happened a few weeks ago at Roland-Garros, the stars may be aligning for Serena Williams. The seven-time Wimbledon champion is chasing that elusive 24th Grand Slam title that would put her on equal terms with Margaret Court. It would also be her first Grand Slam won as a mother, with her last title coming at the 2017 Australian Open whilst she was secretly pregnant. All this is preamble to her first match at SW19 since a desperate loss in the final to Simona Halep in 2019 and the American must shut out that noise. An opening first meeting with Aliaksandra Sasnovich should be a welcome one, especially with the adoring crowd fully behind her. Williams has reached 11 finals here, more than any other Slam and including the last four. Take her to win her first match back in straight sets.
