ALEJANDRO DAVIDOVICH FOKINA
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina has steadily moved up the rankings since turning pro in 2019 and the Spaniard is now at a career-high of 35. That is largely thanks to a superb showing at Roland-Garros where he certainly highlighted his quality en-route to the quarter-finals. The Spaniard was eventually bested by number six seed Alexander Zverev but also seemed to run out of steam. The 22-year-old will compete for the first time at Wimbledon having previously failed to qualify on two separate occasions. However, he did claim the Boys’ title back in 2017 and he will look to draw on that experience as he bids to try and match his French Open exploits.
DENIS KUDLA
Denis Kudla reached a career-high 53rd
in the ATP world rankings back in 2016 but the American can often be found hovering around the 100 mark. The 28-year-old has spent most of this season on the Challenger circuit and has lost in two finals. The most notable of those came in Nottingham a few weeks ago where he beat Dan Evans en-route to the final which shows his definite ability for an upset. Kudla reached the round of 16 at Wimbledon in 2015 which remains his best showing at a Grand Slam so far.
THE PREDICTION
22-year-old Alejandro Davidovich Fokina has plenty of room left to develop in his already excellent game which is a frightening prospect indeed. The Spaniard is an emotional, very backable player who quickly won over large portions of the Roland-Garros with his heart-on-sleeve performances. His fitness can sometimes be called into question as on at least two occasions this season he has been exhausted in the latter stages of tournaments but there is a lot of promise in the youngster. This could go a long way towards the three-hour mark if Denis Kudla brings his best game and the American is always a dangerous opponent at a Grand Slam. ADF should be winning this in three on his best day but nerves and Kudla’s grit makes an outright win for the Spaniard a better shout.
