THE PREDICTION
World number 76 Jil Teichmann has won two WTA titles before now but this is fast-proving to be her best week on tour yet. The 24-year-old has taken out world number two Naomi Osaka and now in-form fellow Swiss Belinda Bencic to reach the semi-finals of a WTA 1000 event in yet another shock run this season by a player outside the top 50. Teichmann will face world number four Karolina Pliskova for the first time in their careers with confidence abound but the 29-year-old Czech is a cool customer with an excellent record at this stage of tournaments. Pliskova’s mentality can be brought into question once she reaches a final, as she has lost her last four finals on tour, but you have to go back to November 2019 for her last defeat in a semi-final.
Five straight wins at this stage and Jil Teichmann’s inexperience at this level put the Czech in the driver’s seat here but Teichmann must not be underestimated. Take Pliskova as the outright winner with a third set looking fairly likely as she aims to set-up a rematch with her Wimbledon vanquisher Ash Barty in the final here.
