THE PREDICTION
World number two is back to his ruthless best on the North American hard swing that has become his happy place. The Russian avenged a loss to Pablo Carreno Busta at the Tokyo Olympic Games last month with a blistering performance on Friday, conceding just two games to the Spaniard to reach the semi-finals. Medvedev won the Cincinnati Open back in 2019 as part of his breakthrough season on tour and he will be fully tuned-in to win this and the final on Sunday ahead of a vastly promising US Open assault. Close friends off the court, Medvedev will face world number seven Andrey Rublev for a fifth time on tour after the younger Russian put out a resurgent Benoit Paire over three sets on Friday. 23-year-old Rublev looks to be coming back into himself after a difficult summer by his standards and his vanquished foes this week were all well-beaten, high quality opponents.
There is certainly something of a mental blockage for Rublev against his ATP Cup teammate. Medvedev has won all four of their encounters, including their first at this very tournament in 2019, without conceding a single set to Rublev. That makes pretty grim reading for Rublev ahead of this semi-final but he always gives 100% and this should be an emotional, exciting match on Saturday. Still, Medvedev to win in straight sets looks a reasonable outcome here.
