World number 30 Karen Khachanov may have slipped a few places down the ATP world rankings this week but the 25-year-old is still in good form compared to the doldrums he was experiencing over the last year or so. The Russian number four beat their number three Aslan Karatsev at the Canadian Open last week in a show of his intention to head back up the rankings as part of an incredibly strong cohort. A straight-sets victory over Kevin Anderson is a fine way to get himself into the swing of things at the Cincinnati Open but this will be an exciting second meeting with Felix Auger-Aliassime.
21-year-old Auger-Aliassime beat Marton Fucsovics in straight sets too to reach the second round with a much-needed boost to his confidence. The world number 17 bombed out of the first round of the Canadian Open last week in a shock defeat to Dusan Lajovic, in keeping with some poor results since an excellent Wimbledon campaign was cut off at the quarter-finals. Khachanov was the winner of their previous meeting at that very same tournament back in 2019, beating a teenage FAA in three sets. This match looks well capable of going to three again here with two players well versed in lengthy matches, so take that option and leave the winner up to chance.
