THE PREDICTION
It was fifth time lucky for world number six Karolina Pliskova as she beat Jessica Pegula for the first time on Thursday in straight sets. The 29-year-old Czech is fast becoming a real frontrunner for the US Open next month with plenty of top 10 stars struggling around her but this quarter-final match with Paula Badosa will be just as tough as facing Pegula. World number 31 Badosa has proved herself more than just a clay-court lover thrice over this week in Cincinnati with three impressive victories over Petra Martic, Aryna Sabalenka and most recently Elena Rybakina. Beating Rybakina and Sabalenka on hard courts is especially impressive but the 23-year-old will have to claim one of the best results of her career of she is to reach the last four.
Pliskova was the winner in straight sets in their only previous meeting but that came way back in 2015 and this is realistically a clean slate with the Spaniard exploding into form this year. Badosa will be entering the US Open in less than two weeks’ time at a career-high WTA ranking no matter what happens here but she is well capable of causing another upset if Pliskova lets her into the match. Take the Czech to win outright here, with three sets a distinct possibility.
