World number 17 Felix Auger-Aliassime is clearly over his mini blip in form following a strong Wimbledon campaign and he avenged his loss there in the quarter-finals by Matteo Berrettini with a straight-sets victory over the Italian on Thursday. The Canadian has taken out three strong competitors now in Berrettini, Karen Khachanov and Marton Fucsovics but he will have to claim one of the biggest wins of his young career to reach the semi-finals with world number three Stefanos Tsitsipas up next. 23-year-old Tsitsipas had to come back from a set down to Lorenzo Sonego on Thursday but ultimately came through as the second seed here in Cincinnati. The Greek has struggled to find his best tennis since losing to Novak Djokovic in the Roland-Garros final from two sets up.
Tsitsipas leads their head-to-head 4-2 in a record set to reach double figures sooner rather than later between two likely top 10 stalwarts of the next decade. However, the Greek has notably won all four of their last meetings in a reversal of their earliest encounters. The last two matches also came in quarter-finals where Tsitsipas won in three sets at the Mexican Open and straight sets on clay at the Barcelona Open. Considering their respective forms, this is likelier to need three sets than two.
