THE PREDICTION
Both Casper Ruud and Alexander Zverev exerted dominance over Argentinian opponents on Thursday to meet each other for the first time in this quarter-final. World number 11 Ruud has been tearing up the clay tournaments this season, winning four titles in 2021 for a total of six on the surface, but so far looks to have transferred that form well onto the hard courts where be beat Diego Schwartzman in straight sets. The Norwegian took out in-form Reilly Opelka the match before that but he remains something of an anomaly on this surface for now at just 22 years old with the vast majority of his success on clay so far. 24-year-old Zverev took out Guido Pella in straight sets too to continue a strong showing in Cincinnati. The German won Olympic Gold earlier this month at Tokyo 2020 and is now riding an eight-match winning streak in fast conditions that suit his game here.
There are more questions than answers for this first meeting between the two. Both are in some of the best form of their lives, especially Ruud, and that should make for a thrilling contest. Take Zverev to win at least a set as the likelier of two men well capable of reaching the semi-finals, with the conditions favouring his style in Cincinnati.
