Whilst Swiss tennis is sadly dwindling on the Men’s side of the game, the likes of Belinda Bencic, Viktorija Golubic and now Jil Teichmann are flying the flag high in the Women’s half. 24-year-old Bencic is yet to drop a set in Cincinnati after winning a shock Gold Medal at the Olympic Games last month and she won a further Silver in the Women’s Doubles alongside Golubic. Meanwhile, world number 76 Jil Teichmann came back from a set down to beat world number two Naomi Osaka and claim the win of her career on Thursday. The 24-year-old lefty started 2021 in excellent form, reaching three quarter-finals in a row on the early hard-court season as well as two semi-finals therein but the clay and grass swings saw her struggle to maintain that level. This first tour-level meeting between world number 12 Bencic and Teichmann has more questions than answers surrounding it now but Teichmann must not be underestimated here. Take Bencic to win at least a set in what looks like needing a decider before a winner is found.
