Two-time Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka was runner-up to Naomi Osaka here last season and has once again got off to a flier. The 32-year-old is yet to drop a set in two convincing wins over Tereza Martincova and Jasmine Paolini and the Belarussian has lost just seven times this year. World number nine has more wins in 2021 but also almost twice the losses in what has been an odd season overall. Still, two straight-set wins over Donna Vekic and Andrea Petkovic are both excellent results and the 2016 Roland-Garros and 2017 Wimbledon champion looks in exactly the right mood for a title tilt in New York.
THE PREDICTION
This is a great early blockbuster between two former world number ones, with both Victoria Azarenka and Garbine Muguruza bringing two Grand Slam titles each to this third round clash. The pair have met four times previously with a head-to-head record finely poised at 2-2 and the lines are blurred even further with a win each on hard and clay. Typically, Azarenka is the better player on hardcourts and Muguruza on clay or grass but that should not bare much notice ahead of what could be the best match of the day on Friday. Azarenka’s world class returning versus Muguruza’s eye for a winner makes this tough to call but a must-watch affair. Take Muguruza to win at least a set as the likelier of two very capable winners here.
