World number 150 Emma Raducanu is receiving all the plaudits again on her US Open debut after a total performance against Shuai Zhang on Thursday saw her blast through two sets. The 18-year-old reached the round of 16 at Wimbledon in July before a breathing irregularity forced her to retire from the second set against Ajla Tomjlanovic. World number 41 Sara Sorribes Tormo is also enjoying her breakthrough season at the age of 24, with a first WTA title won this year in Guadalajara and some excellent performances at both Wimbledon and the Olympics, the latter in which she beat world number one Ash Barty. Sorribes Tormo took out the 23rd seed Karolina Muchova on Wednesday and backed that brilliant win up with a more straightforward hammering of Su-Wei Hsieh.
THE PREDICTION
The fact that Emma Raducanu had lost to Chinese number one Shuai Zhang recently will have certainly helped her coming in to that match and gaining instant revenge should give her even more confidence coming out of it. The 18-year-old’s performances so far at the US Open are hard to put into the right words without sounding like over-hyping but she is inspiring such hyperbole in players and pundits alike with a brilliant, technically excellent game. Sara Sorribes Tormo will have to play to her best level to come through this match but she is unlikely to have had to play the villain of the piece quite like she will on Saturday in New York. With fellow teenage sensation Coco Gauff out of the mix, Raducanu’s crowd will only get bigger and louder the further she goes at the US Open. Sorribes Tormo is an excellent player but the conditions make Raducanu the favourite to reach another round of 16.
