THE LOWDOWN
24-year-old Lloyd Harris looked very strong in a straight-sets victory over Ernesto Escobedo to reach the third round of the US Open for the first time. The South African made this stage of the Australian Open earlier this year before defeat to Mackenzie McDonald but since then his game has progressed significantly to reach the Dubai Open final and recently beat Rafael Nadal for a career win in Washington. World number 10 Denis Shapovalov lost to Roberto Carballes Baena in a shock five-setter at Roland-Garros last season but he was able to avenge that in straight sets in the second round on Thursday. The 22-year-old was exceptional at Wimbledon in July, testing Novak Djokovic throughout their semi-final before defeat and taking out the likes of Andy Murray, Karen Khachanov and Roberto Bautista Agut en-route.
THE PREDICTION
There looks like sets in this for both players in what should be an enthralling match between two young players capable of staying at the top of the sport for next few years at least. World number 10 Shapovalov, especially, is just a little bit more consistency away from really exploding into top five form but Lloyd Harris has proven this year that he can handle the best players on his day too. In fact, Harris beat Shapovalov in the semi-final of the Dubai Open earlier this year before losing to Aslan Karatsev in his first ATP 500 final. The Canadian should be able to exact revenge here if he plays to his best level but take him to win at least two sets with this match looking closer than it may first appear.
