World number Karolina Pliskova saved a match point against Amanda Anisimova before winning the final set tiebreak 9-7 in an enthralling match late on Arthur Ashe. The 29-year-old should be the better for it now having coasted for a few weeks since finishing runner-up at Wimbledon and her shock loss to Jil Teichmann at the Cincinnati Open may not have happened if she had been this fine tuned by Anisimova. 28-year-old Ajla Tomjlanovic also enjoyed an excellent Wimbledon campaign, reaching the quarter-finals before defeat to eventual champion Ash Barty. The world number 45 took out 30th seed Petra Martic in two tough sets late on Thursday night.
THE PREDICTION
Former US Open finalist Karolina Pliskova looks the business at the US Open this fortnight after an intense, confidence boosting win over Amanda Anisimova. The Czech star lost to Ajla Tomjlanovic in their first meeting more than a decade ago but since then Pliskova has won all five meetings with the Aussie, four of which have come on hard courts. After Anisimova proved that Pliskova can be got at, and Tomjlanovic’s own excellent display against Petra Martic, take Pliskova to win outright here, though she should be able to do it in two.
