21st seed Aslan Karatsev had to come back from two sets down in an incredible match with Jordan Thompson on Thursday, saving match points in the fourth set in a 11-9 tiebreaker before winning strongly. The 27-year-old burst onto the scene with a debut run to the semi-finals of the Australian Open earlier this year and he went on to win a first title at the Dubai Open but his form has dipped a little in the second half of the season. 20-year-old Brooksby has also exploded into form this year with an incredible few months on the North American swing. The world number 99 lost to Kevin Anderson in the Hall of Fame Open final in July and then backed that up with a stunning run to the semi-finals of the Washington Open where he lost to eventual champion Jannik Sinner. The American played out what could be the best match of the US Open so far on Thursday, beating Taylor Fritz in four incredible sets.
THE PREDICTION
It is hard to find players that 20-year-old Jenson Brooksby has already faced but he has done so in world number 25 Aslan Karatsev, who beat the youngster in the first round of Roland-Garros in June. That straight-sets dismissal is unlikely to be emulated here after the performance both players put in on Thursday night in two enthralling second round matches that should see crowds flocking to see it. Brooksby will be well-backed by excited home fans hoping for an exciting new prospect to get behind and the world number 99 seems to enjoy playing up to that in New York so far. This is one of the tougher matches to call on Saturday but take Brooksby to win at least a set as the ever-so-slightly favourite to come through on recent form.
