24th seed Dan Evans raced to a two-set lead against Marcos Giron on Wednesday before a brief lapse in intensity let the American back in. The Brit rallied to win his second-successive match at the US Open by four sets as he slowly regains his confidence on the court following a tough tussle with covid-19. 31-year-old Evans has enjoyed the most amount of Grand Slam wins at the US Open but he can emulate his best-ever finish with a win having reached the round of 16 at the Australian Open in 2017. 22-year-old Alexei Popyrin was in control against the 15th seed Grigor Dimitrov on Tuesday before the Bulgarian was forced to retire from the third set. The Aussie has performed well at Grand Slams this season and also claimed his first ATP title at the Singapore Open earlier this year.
THE PREDICTION
Evans beat Popyrin in comfortable straight sets fairly recently at Queen’s Club back in July, although on grass that contest was always tipped in the British number one’s favour. On the faster hard courts of New York, 22-year-old Popyrin will find a more level playing field and his opponent in less potent form, although Evans’ performances so far at the US Open have been encouraging. The 24th seed withdrew from his Men’s Doubles match on Thursday as a precaution but that makes this pick slightly more troublesome. The potential for an injury means leaving this match out of an accumulator but take both players to win a set here and leave the winner up to chance, with Popyrin likely to win any tiebreaks that come about.
