The world number 716 was playing just his second ever tour-level match after taking Paolo Lorenzi to five sets in a first round defeat here two years ago. Fellow youngster Jannik Sinner is a way ahead in his career at just over two years older after turning 20 a week after winning the Washington Open last month. Sinner is the 13th
seed at the US Open and aiming to emulate his quarter-final exit at Roland-Garros last season. Sinner beat Max Purcell in four sets on Tuesday.
THE PREDICTION
18-year-old American Zachary Svajda will go from an interesting spectacle on the outside courts to a must-see prospect in the space of 48 hours in New York and he faces a huge turn-out for the biggest match of his career. Had he met Jannik Sinner on grass two months ago the youngster will have a found a totally different player but Sinner’s confidence is clearly on its way back to early-season levels after a brilliant ATP 500 title winning campaign in August. Svajda will be backed loudly and throughout here as the sever underdog and that should count for something, particularly as Sinner has often struggled to put players away at major tournaments even in victory. The brave call is for both players to take a set here, but the safer move is for Sinner to win outright.
