2020 US Open runner-up Victoria Azarenka played like a woman out for redemption in the first round of the 2021 US Open, beating Tereza Martincova 6-4, 6-0 on Monday. The former world number one is a two-time Grand Slam champion after winning the Australian Open two years running in 2012 and 2013. 25-year-old Jasmine Paolini is through to the second round of the US Open for the first time on only her second appearance at Flushing Meadows. The Italian beat Yaroslava Shvedova in straight sets.
THE PREDICTION
A first meeting with world number 18 Victoria Azarenka is Jasmine Paolini’s prize for a strong opening round at the US Open but this should be a step too far for the 25-year-old. Paolini reached a career-high 87th in the WTA world rankings after reaching the second round of Roland-Garros in June but she has never made it further at a major and Azarenka is playing like she is targeting a fourth final here in New York. Azarenka should be winning this comfortably in straight sets.
