23-year-old Tamara Zidansek enjoyed a stunning run to the semi-finals of Roland-Garros back in June with brilliant career wins over the likes of Bianca Andreescu. The Slovenian beat Bernarda Pera in two tough sets on Monday to reach the second round of the US Open for the first time. Second seed Aryna Sabalenka eventually came through her first round match with Nina Stojanovic strongly but it took some getting used to on the Louis Armstrong Stadium in a three set battle. Sabalenka, also 23, has enjoyed her best season on the WTA tour with a first Masters title in Madrid and reaching the semi-finals of a Grand Slam for the first time at Wimbledon.
THE PREDICTION
This is a tough draw for world number two Aryna Sabalenka, especially after she looked like needing some cobwebs dusted off her game on Monday against Stojanovic. World number 40 Tamara Zidansek has clear potential to improve further and her semi-final run at Roland Garros really picked up steam after she beat a top seed, Bianca Andreescu, in the first round. The likelihood of this needing a decider makes taking Sabalenka to win outright the safer option and a total of three sets the reasonable risk. Their head-to-head record is finely poised at 1-1.
