World number 95 Roberto Carballes Baena claimed one of the best wins of his season in terms of prestige by reaching the second round if the US Open via a four set win over America Tommy Paul. The 28-year-old won his only ATP title to date at the 2018 Quito Open on his favoured clay surface, but two first round wins both here and at the Australian Open this season show he is capable across surfaces. World number 10 Denis Shapovalov looked like he was mentally back in the saddle on Tuesday after a poor couple of weeks between the US Open and his stunning Wimbledon run. The Canadian lost to Novak Djokovic in three tight sets in the semi-finals at SW19 and he snapped a three-match losing streak with a straight-sets win over Federico Delbonis.
THE PREDICTION
Carballes-Baena was the winner over five excellent sets in his only previous encounter with Denis Shapovalov, also in the second round of a Grand Slam at last season’s Roland-Garros. Away from his best surface the Spaniard will be less effective here but he is very tough to put away without a fight. Given Shapovalov’s dismissal of Federico Delbonis, who has bene in excellent form this season, the Canadian should be able to win this in straight sets but the history between these two makes an outright win the wise move.
