37-year-old Philipp Kohlschreiber went down two sets to Marin Cilic in a real old-school fixture on Monday but he fought back well to take the next two sets before Cilic was forced to retire. The German veteran has been playing surprisingly well this season in a limited schedule and he now holds a 6-6 record for 2021. Fellow elder statesman Pablo Andujar has also enjoyed a real renaissance this season, beating both Roger Federer and Dominic Thiem this summer. The Spaniard also came back from two sets down in his first round match against Mikhail Kukushkin on Monday.
THE PREDICTION
This match looks a truly difficult one to call between two members of the old guard in Philipp Kohlschreiber and Pablo Andujar who have both enjoyed impressive moments this season. Both players have five sets in their legs already which should level the playing field here but the head-to-head record sides with Andujar 3-2. The Spaniard has claimed the bigger, blockbuster wins this season but Kohlschreiber’s grit has been so impressive this year. This could be a candidate for another five-setter but take both players to win a set here and leave the winner up to chance.
