10th seed Petra Kvitova looked really good in her first round victory over Polona Hercog, conceding just three games to the Slovenian on Tuesday. 31-year-old Kvitova will face tougher opponents at the US Open this fortnight but it is really encouraging for the two-time Wimbledon champion after a summer full of injury setbacks. World number 115 Kristyna Pliskova qualified well as the 11th seed over the weekend and took that form into a straight-sets win over Danka Kovinic, also on Tuesday. The 29-year-old has just one WTA title to her name so far, winning in Tashkent back in 2016.
THE PREDICTION
As with so many of her recent tournaments, Petra Kvitova’s chances of reaching the latter stages of the US Open rest almost entirely on her body. Several niggling injuries over the summer have interrupted the Czech star’s form but she still managed to win the Qatar Open earlier this season. She shares a 1-1 head-to-head record with Kristyna Pliskova, with Pliskova the most recent winner on clay back at the 2018 Charleston Open.
