21-year-old Varvara Gracheva is through the second round of the US Open for the second successive season after coming back from a set down to beat Nuria Parrizaz-Diaz on Tuesday. The world number 82 eventually lost in the third round here last season and she emulated that best finish at a Grand Slam with a third round exit at Roland-Garros in June. World number 26 Paula Badosa came through in an altogether more comfortable straight-sets win over Alison Van Uytvanck in the first round. The 24th seed now holds a superb 34-13 record for the season in which she won her first WTA title at the Serbia Open and reached the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros.
THE PREDICTION
A 20-year-old Varvara Gracheva beat Paula Badosa at the US Open in straight sets last season to reach the second round but the 2021 version of Badosa returned the favour on clay this year at the Charleston Open. The 23-year-old’s rise shows no signs of stopping even if it has slowed since the end of her favoured clay season and she has proved herself a superb all-court player after reaching the round of 16 at Wimbledon. Take Badosa to win outright here, considering Gracheva has taken at least a set in both their matches so far.
